Smile is about pre-teen Raina, who just wants to be a normal sixth grader. Unfortunately for her, one night after a Girl Scouts meeting she trips and falls-in the process knocking out her two front teeth. But her dental issues aren't the end of her adventures that year(although they are a highlight). There's boy drama and confusion, betrayal of friends and-an earthquake. This book outlines a lot of "teenager problems", both normal and abnormal. However, I didn't really enjoy the formatting of this book, although that may be part because I don't really read graphic novels. I do think some younger kids would enjoy this book however. I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.

In smile Raina gets braces after a freak accident. Will Raina ever be the same again or will she forever be called metal mouth at school?
I actually read this book quite a while ago. I can sort of connect to it because I have an overbite, and people have been always telling me that I need braces, which is true, but it was embarrassing and I don't really want braces. I felt really bad for Raina when she fell. It was pretty intense and the event hooked me into the book and I couldn't stop reading it. I would recommend this book to people who love graphic novels and people who can relate to Raina. Overall, it was a great book and I really enjoyed it.
Before I can say anything, I need to address the AMAZING illustrations in this book. 10 out 10 for sure. The pictures were all very appealing, colorful, playful, adding to the beautiful quality of this book. I loved the story of this graphic novel. I've definitely read my share of graphic novels, and Smile was not a disappointment. Rain Telgemeier succeeds in making this book relatable and very realistic. One thing I hate about books is when all the characters and events that occur seem too far-stretched and very unlikely, but Smile was the complete opposite. Any teenager can relate. Just another thing I want to applause the author on is her ability to describe the pain of braces ever so accurately (first-hand experience and they're terrible -___-).
