Planet Earth Is Blue

Planet Earth Is Blue

By Nicole Panteleakos

Planet Earth is Blue is a book about Nova. She is an autistic, nonverbal girl who has been in and out of abusive foster homes. Nova has a great interest in space, and that is what she and her sister, Bridget connect with. Bridget promises Nova that she will be there at the Challenger launch, so Nova counts down the days to the Challenger launch, writing letters for Bridget. However, Challenger explodes, 1 minute and 13 seconds (a number Nova considers unlucky) in, and Nova is saddened by the fact that her sister couldn't come, and realizes why. As an active autism rights campaigner and a space enthusiast, I thought that this book portrayed autism well. The book shows how lonely autistic people can be, and the importance of changing prejudiced views about autism. Along with that, this book is historical fiction, one of my favorites! I really loved this book, and I thought that there should be more books like Planet Earth Is Blue. If you ever find this book at a library, try reading it! It will give you a new perspective on disability and hope.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (Deluxe Illustrated Edition)

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (Deluxe Illustrated Edition)

By John Boyne

Ameesha

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Book Review- Ameesha Bruno a nine year old boy from Germany, story starts when he comes home to find one of his house maids going through his personal things and packing them in crates. He finds out that he is moving away from his 3 best friends, comfortable house and is going to a place where there would be no friends for him to play with other than his 12 year old sister, who Bruno tells us is a Hopeless case. He is told countless times by his father that his job, which is the reason why they moved to their new house Out-With will change their lives forever. He has a completely different view of how this house will change his life forever. Bruno had to live in a place where his father's soldiers walking in and out of the house especially one Lieutenant Kotler in particular who gives Bruno the creeps. Bored of the house, Bruno decides to go exploring to find his curiosity lingering to a strange barb wired fence. This fence plays a role of separating 2 different worlds. Bruno meets a boy, Shmuel who wears striped pajamas and makes Bruno long to wear it as a costume. As their relationship grows older Bruno’s best friend grows weaker. The book ends in a devastating way and you might end in tears. This is a heart-warming, young adult story shown in a child's perspective of the Nazy war. The book showed the innocence and purity of children. I give this book and 4 and a half stars out of 5 because I thought that this book could have improved by explaining a couple of the scenes which where just left hanging at the end of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone that is over the age of 10.
