My Life in Pink & Green: Pink & Green Book One

My Life in Pink & Green: Pink & Green Book One

By Lisa Greenwald

Have you ever wanted life to be like it was a couple years ago? Lucy did from My life in Pink and Green by Lisa Greenwald. This book takes place in Lucy’s family’s pharmacy and at Lucy’s school in modern days. The protagonist in this book is Lucy because even though she is only 12 she tries to fix all of the problems that are going on with her family’s pharmacy and her life. The antagonist in this book is Lucy’s family’s pharmacy because nobody shops at her pharmacy anymore and it might have to get shut down because there is almost no business anymore. One conflict in this story is that there is not a lot of business at the pharmacy anymore. Another conflict in this story is that Lucy’s mom and grandma don't have a lot of money so they might have to sell the pharmacy and get another job. The turning point is in the middle to the end of the book. Lucy finds something that could help her pharmacy and everything starts to go better for Lucy. I liked this book and I recommend this book to people who like realistic fiction books and people who like girly books.

Princess in Pink (Princess Diaries, Vol. 5)

By Meg Cabot

In her heart of hearts, all Mia Thermopolis (Princess of Genovia) wants to do is go to the prom. Now, where's the romance in that, Mia asks? Even as a princess, Mia seems unable to get what she wants. In the end, will Mia be in Michael's arms under the dreamy lights of the prom, or will she be at home eating her own chocolates spending another prom night alone?

The Last Straw (Diary of a Wimpy Kid)

The Last Straw (Diary of a Wimpy Kid)

By Jeff Kinney

The Wimpy Kid books never fail to make me laugh. Kinney has a great sense of comic timing in these books and the pictures really do make the story what it is. What bothers me about these books is the main character's attitude and the way he treats others. I hope that kids see that the reason Greg gets himself into trouble all the time is because of his attitude. Instead of looking up to him, it's my hope that kids who read this book say, "Man, if Greg just treated people with a little more respect then maybe he wouldn't always get himself into these bad situations." I've said it in other reviews of these books before, but I'll say it again: I don't think Greg's physique is wimpy; I think his character is. Greg’s father wants to make a man out of his dandelion-blowing son. To achieve this admirable goal, he is intent on sending Greg off to a military academy. This doesn’t sit well with Mr.Wimpy, who was looking forward to a summer of playing video-games and sleeping....snarfing down junk-food and sleeping....hooking up with the pretty Holly Hills and yep, catching up on some more sleep. The Wimpy Kid series may be considered juvenile and trite. But it’s entertaining and you read it with a constant smile playing on your lips. Sometimes you even snort with glee (well, I did). I say, regardless of your age....pick it up for some instant laughs, dry humour and a cast of characters that is so unbelievably well put together that you can’t help but stay hooked.

Freedom Stone

Freedom Stone

By Jeffrey Kluger

Lillie has lived as a slave with her mama and papa and her younger brother Plato, at Greenfog Plantation her whole life. When the Confederate Army promised freedom for the family of any slave who serves in the War Between the States, Lillie's papa decides to serve in the army to give him and his family freedom. But Lillie and her family receives news that papa had been killed in the war, they aren't freed. The Confederate Army claims that he was a thief and stole a pouch of Yankee gold, so they broke the promise. Lillie knew that her papa wouldn't steal anything. Could she prove that her papa is innocent and free her mama and Plato? I really liked the story and Lillie's determination to help prove that her father is not a thief. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to read about what life was like to a slave.

Kristy and Mr. Mom (Baby-sitters Club)

Kristy and Mr. Mom (Baby-sitters Club)

By Ann M. Martin

By all accounts, Kristy’s stepfather, Watson, has been working too hard. The family is worried that Watson is going to hurt himself. Sure enough, Watson has a life-threatening heart attack. After the close call, Watson makes a decision: he’ll quit his high stress job and become a stay-at-home dad. The news comes as a surprise to the Brewer/Thomas household and everyone expects the worst. However, the next few days run incredibly smoothly and Kristy and the others are starting to like this new change. But when Nannie decides to leave because she thinks she’s not needed (or wanted) and Emily Michelle gets the flu, will “Super Mom” collapse under the pressure? This book was amusing. It depicted a practical family, but it was done masterfully so you are still getting fictional entertainment. Kristy’s family is disorganized but also very much lovable. It’s easy to fall in love with the family. But mixed in with the charm and humor, there were also very good life lessons. One being the fact that doing hard things on your own only hurts you and eventually others. The book stresses the point that asking for help is not shameful but, in fact, honorable. I appreciated the reminder. I walked away from reading this book feeling refreshed and motivated. I suggest this book if you like family, babysitting, and friendship. Happy reading!
