The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

By Douglas Adams

This book is about Arthur Dent, a man who's house is being destroyed to make way for a bypass. At about the same time the vogons, (aliens) are about to destroy Earth to make way for another bypass. Ford Prefect is Arthur's best friend who also happens do be an alien. They hitch a ride on the vogon ship and are thrown into space where against all improbabilities they are picked up by the Heart of Gold spaceship which is piloted by Zaphod Beeblebrox, president of the galaxy. Along with him is Trillian a human like Arthur. Together they go on a hilarious adventure across space. I absolutely love this book. It can be a little confusing but mainly it's easy to understand. There's great humor. I went on to read the rest of the series and am on book 3 and also watched the movie.

Bad Hair Day (Whatever After #5)

Abby's in a horrible mood. She just got eleventh place in the school spelling bee, even though she was completely sure she would win. She can spell! She's smart! So why didn't she come out on top? Eyes stinging, Abby simply grumbles irritably when her little brother Jonah suggests going through the mirror that night—that is, until she realizes that Jonah intends to go through the mirror alone. Abby's sisterly instincts kick in and she runs after her tricky little brother! This time, they land in the coveted Rapunzel story. They're thrilled to meet the actual Rapunzel in-person, I mean, who doesn't want to meet an internationally-renowned fairytale princess? But Jonah accidentally shreds and rips most of Rapunzel's hair by climbing up it with his soccer cleats. Oopsie! Now, Abby and Jonah race to save Rapunzel's hair—and, most importantly, her story—before it's too late. But along the way, Rapunzel uncovers horrifying truths that have been stored away for years, and Abby realizes that winning isn't always everything. This brilliant fifth installment in the Whatever After series is bound to raise the "hairs" (get it?) on the back of your neck, make you cry, and most importantly, make you smile.

When My Name Was Keoko (Jane Addams Honor Book (Awards))

When My Name Was Keoko (Jane Addams Honor Book (Awards))

By Linda Sue Park

I really like The 39 Clues, and when I found out that Linda Sue Park had another book, about Korea under Japanese rule (I'm from South Korea, not North, why does everyone ask that), I was so curious I had to read the book. When My Name Was Keoko is about the time Korea was under Japanese rule. It is written in two perspectives, Sun-hee and Tae-yul's. I loved how some of the characters (Sun-hee, Tae-yul, their parents, Mrs. Ahn (a neighbor), and Tomo) rebelled against Japan in quiet or energetic (if that makes sense) ways. This book beautifully portrayed how a family living in those times would act. I'm a sucker for historical fiction and teenage books, so When My Name Was Keoko was perfect! The ending wrapped the whole book wonderfully, with Sun-hee teaching Tae-yul the Korean alphabet. However, something that could have been better is the lack of background information. Someone unfamiliar with Korea's history might've initially felt confused or bored. I also worried that using Korean pronouns would perplex readers who do not know Korean. To summarize, When My Name Was Keoko is a great book about rebellion, family, and strength. Even though it may be confusing for people who didn't have a lot of Korean culture exposure, I recommend this book for 9 and up!

Making Bombs for Hitler

Making Bombs for Hitler

By Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch

''Lida thought she was safe.''- This book is so emotional! The fact that the author had asked someone to tell them about their story, their story about getting captured by Hitler and basing it off of a book, is incredible. Lida has been captured by the Nazi and separated from her sister Larissa. Now she has been taken to a camp with other kids like her. When they get there, children under 12 are separated in one group, and over 12 in another. An older kid told her to lie to them about your age, say you're older. They say if you're older, you're useful. And how she knows this? This isn't the first time she was captured by the Nazi. But when Lida's friend gets an idea to sabotage the bombs they are assigned to make, it may work. They tell them they are watched all times. But they can carry dirt and dump it into the bombs. The idea actually works. Soon Lida and her friends who survived get rescued by the American army. But what about Larissa? Fortunately, Lida gets a letter from her sister saying she got rescued and is in Canada! This book was so detailed and I would definitely give it a 5/5 rating. I recommend this to people interested in the Nazi and Adolf Hitler.

White Bird

White Bird

By R J Palacio

In this book Julian’s grandma(Sara) is telling Julian a chapter of a dark moment in her life. It was pretty hard for her to tell Julian this story. She tells parts that she has told no one. Except Julian. R.J. Palacio did such a nice job on this book, but at some parts it has French so I couldn’t understand. This book is a roller coaster of emotions. I cried at some parts, but truly this book is so amazing. This book is for sure a number 1 book.

The Voyage to Magical North (The Accidental Pirates)

The Voyage to Magical North (The Accidental Pirates)

By Claire Fayers

: Brine Seaborne is on a ship, sailing to a place over the hills and far away...Brine is eating octopus tentacles, which are quite chewy, but she wonders whether or not they are safe to eat... The ship's name is the Onion, a ship spoken of in legends. Locked in the brig is a bald magician named Marfak West, and he is very evil. There are also some weirdly named pirates, a mediocre pirate chef, and a strange magician apprentice, Peter. This quirky novel tells the tale of how Brine, former servant to the grouchy old magician so-and-so. Together with Peter, the magician's apprentice, she flees her home of the Minutes Islands and comes across the Onion. Convinced that a pirate's life is not for them, the ship's captain Cassie O'Pia decides to sell them as servants at Morning Island; alas, her plan is interrupted when that evil bald magician suddenly appears and tells them of a mysterious place near the north pole called Magical North... There, they say, since all magic flows north, one may stand and see all. Ooooh. And there's treasure. This amazing book was full of great characters, a nicely imagined fantastical world, and the evil penguins were a nice touch. Or are they puffins? Also, the excerpts from the books of the Magical North world at the start of chapters added to the story. But I was perturbed when I realized that the cover is not accurate, since there isn't actually a giant octopus in the story. Also, how Marfak West doesn't tell lies is mentioned many times; around three people said that in the book, and there are around three similes about pulling down mountains. Aside from that, the writing style was better than average. Great author, very original story. I definitely recommend it for seekers of good Middle-Grade Fiction.
