The Stonekeeper (Amulet, Book 1)

Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi. Amulet starts with a prologue of what happens before the story starts. Sadly her dad died and she and her mother are left. Years later Emily (the story's main character) has a brother and they move to a new town, in a new house. In the middle of the night, after she found the amulet, her mom heard something from the basement. But Navin and her mom get eaten. Navin gets rescued but their mother is still in there. So they run and hide. After they find a house and find their great grandpa inside. He tel them to save their mother before passing away. I think Emily and her brother try to say they being brave is good in life.
