Yuvanlucky is right they don't want to harm you, but when they feel threatened they attack. last week I was outside and there was a garter snake in my yard. it almost bit me after i picked it up, but later i figured out he was the neighborhood snake (lefty) because his right eye got taken out by a human. This is why he is afraid of people so if you see an injured snake i'd say leav it be because he bites people who try to pick him up.
