On July 4, 2026, the United States will celebrate its 250th birthday. To mark the occasion, officials will bury a time capsule in Philadelphia. The capsule is designed to give future Americans a glimpse of life in 2026. It will be opened on July 4, 2276, when the nation observes its 500th birthday.
All 50 states, Washington, DC, and the US territories contributed to the project. Some, like Utah, went all out. The state sent 100 cards featuring historical citizens, 13 coins, eight documents, eight pins, two granite disks, and a booklet. Others contributed just one or two items. Arkansas submitted a diamond, while Maine added a bone from an endangered whale. Wisconsin contributed a feather from “Old Abe,” a bald eagle that served with Union soldiers during the American Civil War. California sent a high-tech package. It included a computer chip and an AI-generated prediction of what the state might look like in 2276.
Choosing the items was only part of the challenge. Making sure they would survive underground for 250 years was even more difficult. That task was given to Michael Berilla and his team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Water is one of the biggest threats to buried time capsules. Even small leaks can destroy their contents. To solve this problem, Berilla and his team made the capsule from stainless steel and sealed it with a soft metal that fills tiny gaps to create a watertight barrier. They also chose a cylindrical design instead of a traditional box. That is because boxes are more likely to crack at the corners after years underground, increasing the risk of moisture leaks. A heavy steel cover will also be placed on top to further protect the capsule.
"Philadelphia would have to be six feet underwater in order for this time capsule to even possibly take on water," Berilla said.

The capsule will be buried near Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026. This is where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. To help future generations find the site, it will be marked by a custom granite-and-steel sculpture. Shaped like a large segmented snake, it is inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s famous 1754 "Join, or Die" cartoon. In that drawing, Franklin used a snake divided into parts to show that the original American colonies needed to unite to survive. The National Park Service has also recorded the location in official documents that will be passed down to future park rangers.
When the capsule is finally opened in 2276, the first items inside will be a photograph of the engineering team and a letter from Berilla.
It states, "Greetings from the living, breathing hearts and hands of 2026. We will have long since returned to dust, but our devotion, pride, and unwavering hope for what our world could become are alive right here inside this steel. We built this for you."
