Those celebrating Father’s Day on June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere will get more than gifts and celebrations this year. They will enjoy extra daylight, too. That is because June 21, 2026, also happens to be the June solstice, the first day of summer. For places north of the equator, it is the longest day of the year. In the Southern Hemisphere, June 21 will mark the start of winter. It will be the shortest day of the year.
The different seasons result from Earth's orbit around the Sun and the 23.5-degree tilt of its axis. During the June solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted directly toward the Sun. It receives the most sunlight. This results in longer days and the start of summer. Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun. This leads to shorter days and the start of winter.
The celebrations extend throughout the day. But the solstice marks the exact moment when the Sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This is the Sun's most northerly point in the sky. This year, that will occur at 4:24 AM ET (1:24 AM PT).
One of the oldest known solstice celebrations takes place at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. Built over 4,000 years ago, this prehistoric monument consists of massive standing stones arranged in a circle. The stones are carefully aligned with the sunrise on the summer solstice. Each year, thousands gather here to see this moment.
In Sweden, Norway, and Finland, Midsummer is one of the biggest holidays of the year. It takes place around the summer solstice. People celebrate with bonfires, flower crowns, and traditional foods. A key part of the celebration is the maypole, a tall wooden pole decorated with greenery and flowers. People gather around it to dance and sing.
Just across the sea, Iceland celebrates the occasion with the vibrant Secret Solstice Festival. The three-day event showcases music and dance performances by artists from around the world, under nearly 72 hours of daylight.
Alaska celebrates the June solstice over several days with festivals and events. One of the most unusual is the Midnight Sun Game in Fairbanks. This tradition began in 1906. It involves playing baseball at midnight without artificial light.
Happy Summer Solstice!
