Exo (a novel)
By Fonda Lee
a ya book with aliens colonizing the earth? no, thanks. a ya book with aliens colonizing the earth written by fonda lee? sign me up! lee can turn basically anything into not just readable, but well-written material, so i was quite excited to read exo. it did not disappoint in the slightest. donovan reyes is the kind of guy everyone can root for, the chivalrous hero who sometimes makes questionable decisions but tries to do what's right. don't mistake him for a gary stu, though; he has real flaws. i liked how the story is written from the perspective of someone who's intimately familiar with aliens, not your typical invasion-fighting human. i also liked the nuance because what i normally see in sci-fi is aliens = bad, humans = good, but lee shows the good things that the zhree (what the aliens are called) did for earth too. the main character, donovan, is the son of a prime liasion (think diplomat with way more power), who maintains good relations with the zhree. understandably, not everyone on earth is happy with alien colonization; there's a faction of humans known as sapience who engage in violent terrorist attacks against zhree and other humans. donovan and his friends are exos, modified humans with fighting and pain withstanding abilities, and they police sapience sympathizers. but one day...disaster strikes. he is kidnapped by sapience. his father refuses to negotiate with the terrorist movement, and donovan is left to his own devices to survive. i'd like to applaud fonda lee for taking an unoriginal premise and making it so unique. i've read a bit of sci-fi before but never seen things exactly like zhree or exos. also, i'm a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope (donovan and anya) which was done well here. to summarize, exo is a spectacular book and if lee writes more in the future, i will sprint to the library (who cares if i got last place in track? i can run fast when i'm motivated by books).

So This is Love: A Twisted Tale
By Elizabeth Lim
Many of us know the story of Cinderella that we have come to love. How she lost her glass slipper, but the prince is able to find her by letting her try it on. But this book begs the question...what if she never tried on the glass slipper? In this alternate take on Cinderella's magical story, the author decides to tell a tale of what would have happened if Lady Tremaine had locked Cinderella in her room and never tried on the slipper. Cinderella has the best night of her life at the ball. She dances with the prince for hours and even is able to see a secret garden with him. But Cinderella must rush home before midnight, unable to tell the prince who she is but leaving behind one glass slipper. But when the Grand Duke comes with the glass slipper to Lady Tramaine's home, the cruel stepmother locks Cinderella away, so for her not to try on the slipper. After missing the opportunity to find her true love, the prince Charles, Cinderella sets out to find a new life for herself, one far away from Lady Tremaine's cruelty. As luck would have it, Cinderella lands a job in a place she never thought she would step foot in again, the Palace. In the Palace, Cinderella takes care of the king's visiting sister, Duchess Genevieve. But as Cinderella begins to get settled in her new life, working for the Duchess, Cinderella catches wind of a mass conspiracy against the king and ultimately, the prince. On top of all that, Cinderella is determined to return magic back to Aurelias, once and for all. With the help of unlikely friends, Cinderella must stop the conspiracy before it is too late. And in the process, will she able to convince Prince Charles that she is the "mystery princess"? Love doesn't even begin to describe the amount of fondness I have for this book. Not many books that I read for the first time become my favorite book but this one really did. I was captivated from the first sentence and was enthralled with the magic of the whole book, from start to finish. The fairytale romance was the sweetest part. The author was able to beautifully display the love Prince Charles and Cinderella had for each other. This book truly did keep you on the edge of your seat. Every chapter was a cliff-hanger, making it even harder to part with it. I would strongly suggest this book to anyone looking a reimagined fairytale romance story. Happy reading!!
I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967 (I Survived #17)
By Lauren Tarshis
This book is about a girl who goes with her grandpa and brother to a cabin in Glacier National Park. She was going to put their campfire out and go in after her grandpa and brother. She put the fire out and was about to head in when she heard a low growl. She turned and saw a tall, skinny grizzly. She backed away slowly until she got into the cabin. She got in and relaxed; she looked out the door and saw the grizzly there on the porch. (I won’t give anymore details on that to keep it a surprise) Later, she finds herself face-to-face with another angry grizzly.
Not If I Save You First
By Ally Carter
This book is interesting. It is very suspenseful and funny. But it is a little uncomfortably romantic. I would warn that from the summary the book gives, you don't know that it is pretty much a romance book. Other than that, I really liked this book. Maddie is not a normal girl. Her father is the Secret Service for the POTUS. And Maddie is friends with the POTUS's son, Logan. But after a life changing event, Maddie and her father must leave Washington D.C. and move to Alaska. That means leaving Logan. In Alaska, Maddie is a new person. She's tough, strong, and confident. Maddie, over the years, has tried to keep in contact with Logan but he has never written back. Maddie finally forgets about Logan. But one day, Logan shows up in Alaska. Maddie is ready to hate him, but inwardly she still misses him. After he gets kidnapped in Alaska, Maddie must make the decision to save him and reconcile. This book is pretty good. I think it would have been better if there weren't romantic parts but that is just my opinion. I suggest it if you like girl-power, romance, adventure and friendship. Happy reading!
