Moose Flannagan moves with his family to Alcatraz so his dad can work as a prison guard and his sister, Natalie, can attend a special school. But Natalie has autism, and when she's denied admittance to the school, the stark setting of Alcatraz begins to unravel the tenuous coping mechanisms Moose's family has used for dealing with her disorder.
When Moose meets Piper, the cute daughter of the Warden, he knows right off she's trouble. But she's also strangely irresistible. All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parents' expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.
Set in 1935, when guards actually lived on Alcatraz Island with their families. Choldenko's second novel brings humor to the complexities of family dynamics and illuminates the real struggle of a kid trying to free himself from the "good boy" stance he's taken his whole life.

Very true.:D
I love this book so much. It's about a kid who has to move because his dad gets a new job. His sister has to go to a boarding school because she has a little problem. That's all I read so far. :)
very cool, is the start of the series, Al Capone...... Its ok, worse then the 2nd one
This book was a great, quick read for 3-6 graders! Must Have!
this book is AMAZING..... Moose Flanagan and his family justed moved to Alcatraz and his dad worked as a guard. He has some friends or aquantainces named Piper, Jimmy, Theresa, and Annie. Moose's sister, Natalie, has autism and his mom is trying everything to help her. Instead Moose's relasionship with her helped her, and the mom barely did anything that made Natalie feel better.Piper is sassy and she's the warden's daugher. There are some VERY interesting relationships and the end.
A fun story to read with cool characters. I like that it refers to Alcatraz;s history. A unique ending that makes you think.
This is a great book about a boy who is adjusting to his new life at Alcatraz.
This book was an assignment to read over the summer. I heard it was a good book and, so far, it is! Just started today and I am already on Chapter 3!
really good so far!
It's not one of my best books, but it's still very intriguing, and I liked it. I mean, a boy living on Alcatraz? That's HARSH. I was really exasperated at Moose in the part of the book when he didn't understand it when Natalie kept on saying"105" over and over again. I mean, does he even UNDERSTAND how Natalie feels? This '105' must really like Natalie to be that nice to her, would he?
Four stars
