An exceptionally moving story of triumph against all odds set during World War II, from the acclaimed author of Jefferson’s Sons and for fans of Number the Stars.

Ten-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada’s twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother Jamie is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn’t waste a minute—she sneaks out to join him.

So begins a new adventure for Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read, and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan—and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

This masterful work of historical fiction is equal parts adventure and a moving tale of family and identity—a classic in the making.

I thought that this was a great book. I have always been into ww11. I recommend to read this

I started reading on Amazon.com, where they let you Look Inside and I was hooked after reading the first chapter! I ordered it immediately and when it came in the mail I just sat down and read it in one sitting! If you want to read a story that mixes WWII history with a story of a young girl triumphing against all odds, this is the book for you! The main character is a nine year old girl named Ada, who was born with a club foot and cannot walk well. Unfortunately, Ada happens to have the worst mother in the world who abuses her unbelievably! This book was written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley who also wrote Number the Stars. I highly recommend this wonderful book!

I am sorry but I believe that number the stars was written by Lois Lowry. I can totally see how you can get that confused! I love your review though!

Actually Lois Lowry wrote Number the Stars. I just checked my copy of it. You are welcome for explaining!

this book is great it is about a young girl who has a club foot is ashamed of and wont let her leave the house but when her brother leaves to escape the blitz she sneaks out with him to go live in the country. i think everyone should read this.

This is quite an interesting book about a girl named Ada and her brother. I feel like it is a really touching story that is really special. Ada and her brother are sent from London to the US in WWII! It's very exciting, and sad all mushed into one big book.

I'm reading it now it's a really good book
