This book keeps you on the edge of your seat because there are a lot of ups and downs like Stella dying but then Ruby coming to the mall and Ivan protecting her. It was hard to believe that humans made a terrible decision to keep animals locked and trapped in a small cage at a mall for 27 years. When they finally got out, it was a huge success for Ivan, Julia and Ruby. They worked together as a team for a great cause. This book represents friendship and compassion to do what is right, to honor promises, and to take care of each other until the end. Our class loved this book tons and tons! We will never forget Ivan, our mighty silverback!

Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!
This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point-of-view of Ivan himself.
Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

I want to read this because it is based on Ivan, who lived at Zoo Atlanta. I believe it is told from Ivan's point of view too.
I love her books so much I need to read this so bad!
I decided to read it because it funny and it looked like it would interest me. It is a awesome book and it is really funny. It's also kinda sad. It's about a stray dog,2 elephants, and a gorilla!!
The first-"person" point of view is interesting; couldn't put it down. Watch the YouTube video of Ivan's last years at the Atlanta zoo AFTER you've read the book.
While I read this story about Ivan and his friends, I felt for all the animals that live in solitary. Is that what it would be like? The author's story and style of writing gripped at my heart. I couldn't the book down-read it in one day. Superb.
I decided to read this book because I love animals! This book was very detailed in Ivan's life with his friends at the mall. How Ivan learned to draw and take care of an elephant was amazing! This book was a little shorter than I'm used to though, but I loved it anyway.
I love this book too! Anyone interested in a good book... PLEASE READ IT!!!
