NASA’s next-generation observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, is undergoing final preparations at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. If all goes according to plan, Roman will launch at 7:26 am on August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

Roman has a 7.9-foot (2.4-meter) wide mirror. This is about the same size as the mirror on the Hubble Space Telescope, which has been taking detailed pictures of space for more than 35 years. But Roman has a much wider field of view. This will allow its powerful camera to capture large areas of the sky in a single image.

"Its surveying capabilities are over 1,000 times faster than Hubble, and can chart 200 times more sky in a single image," said NASA administrator Jared Isaacman. "What would take Hubble 2,000 years to process, Roman can do in a year. The images it captures will be so large there is not a screen in existence large enough to show them."

The telescope’s initial mission is expected to last five years. During this time, it will collect large amounts of data about stars, galaxies, and other objects in space. Scientists will use these observations to study how the universe is changing. This will help them better understand dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter is an invisible form of matter that helps shape galaxies. Dark energy is a mysterious force that is thought to be causing the universe to expand faster.

Roman will also hunt for alien worlds. It will use an instrument called a coronagraph to block the bright glare from stars. This will allow Roman to spot dim planets orbiting them. The coronagraph can also study the light from these planets to learn about their atmospheres. Testing this instrument will help NASA develop future missions that can search for Earth-like planets around nearby stars.

“We may serendipitously discover entirely new things we don’t yet know to look for,” said Julie McEnery, Roman’s senior project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
