Why Pink Cleats Have Taken Over The World Cup

Soccer fans may have noticed a "sea" of pink cleats at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The trend is not limited to one team or one brand. Players from different countries, even those sponsored by competing shoe companies, are wearing similar shades of pink. This is not a random coincidence. Rather, it is a deliberate strategy used by all the major athletic brands. So why pink?
Visual contrast
Nike, Adidas, and Puma began designing their World Cup shoes several years before the tournament. At that time, trend forecasters predicted that a bright pink known as "Electric Fuchsia" would be one of the most popular colors of summer 2026. The striking color creates a strong contrast against the green grass, making the shoes easy to spot on television and in stadiums. As a result, all three companies independently adopted pink for the tournament.
No clash with team uniforms
While the 48 competing nations wear uniforms in shades of red, blue, yellow, and white, no country uses large amounts of pink. This helps the shoes stand out against socks and jerseys, giving brands maximum visibility.
Confidence boost
The color may also give players a mental edge. Many modern athletes prefer bright, eye-catching colors because they believe it helps build confidence on the field. In soccer, there is also an unwritten expectation that flashy shoes signal strong performance. Many players use this challenge to elevate their game.
The one downside
The pink trend has been a major success for both television and brand visibility. However, it has created one small problem for fans. In the past, players were easy to recognize from a distance just by their shoe colors. Now, with so many players wearing pink, fans have to pay closer attention to jersey numbers instead. That visual clutter might be exactly why Argentina’s Lionel Messi chose to wear custom ivory and light blue cleats instead.
