History was made at the 2026 London Marathon, as two runners finished in under two hours for the first time in an official race. Sabastian Sawe crossed the finish line at 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds. Yomif Kejelcha followed just 11 seconds later at 1:59:41. Meanwhile, Tigst Assefa set a new women-only world record, finishing in 2:15:41. While many factors contributed to these performances, all three athletes shared one key advantage. They all wore the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 shoes.
Adidas developed the Adizero Adios Pro line for elite marathon racing. Each version has been refined to improve speed and efficiency. The latest model, the Adios Pro Evo 3, weighs just 3.4 ounces (97 grams). It is the lightest running shoe ever made.
The shoe’s sole is designed to maximize forward momentum. Its shape encourages athletes to land on their forefoot, reducing energy loss. Inside the shoe is adidas’ Lightstrike Pro Evo foam and a carbon-fiber system. Together, they create a spring-like effect. The foam compresses when the foot hits the ground and rebounds as the runner pushes off. The carbon-fiber system adds stiffness. This helps reduce energy loss as the foot pushes off the ground. It also guides the foot forward for a more efficient stride.
Super shoes like these are known to improve running efficiency by about 4 percent compared to normal shoes. The Evo 3 adds another 1.6 percent improvement. That may not seem like much. But it can make a difference in long races.
With a price tag of $500, the Evo 3 is not cheap. The cost is even more striking given that it is built to last for just one race, plus limited training use. For elite athletes chasing world records, however, that trade-off is worth it.
Of course, shoes are only part of the story. Elite runners like Sawe also rely on years of training, careful nutrition, and expert coaching. Still, the record-breaking performances in London show how modern technology is helping athletes run faster than ever before.
