Renowned conductor and composer Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) died in San Francisco, California, on April 22, 2026. He was 81. Over his career, MTT won 12 Grammy Awards and received several of the country's highest arts honors.

MTT was born in Los Angeles on December 21, 1944, into a family of theater performers and musicians. Growing up in this environment, he developed an early love of music. He later studied music at the University of Southern California.

His first big break came at age 24 during a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert. When the conductor fell ill, MTT stepped in to take over. The performance impressed the audience and helped launch his career.

In 1995, MTT became music director of the San Francisco Symphony, one of the leading orchestras in the United States. He remained in the role for 25 years, leading nearly 1,800 performances. MTT was known for his expressive and energetic conducting style. It helped him connect with audiences worldwide.

MTT’s legacy goes beyond the concert hall. He helped establish the American Mavericks Festival to celebrate American composers. He also created the television series Keeping Score. It helped people new to classical music understand it through clear explanations and performances. In addition, he co-founded the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. This academy trains gifted musicians preparing for leadership roles in the orchestra.

In 2021, MTT was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Despite this, he continued to conduct on a reduced schedule for several years. MTT’s final concert took place on April 20, 2025. He was just a few months from turning 81.

MTT leaves behind a lasting legacy through his music and his mentorship of young artists. Over his long career, he helped shape the way orchestras perform and how audiences experience classical music.
