The Pokémon Fossil Museum will make its North American debut at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History in May 2026. This traveling exhibition combines real fossils with Pokémon displays. It makes learning about fossils fun and engaging. The exhibit first opened in Japan in 2021 and has been showcased at several museums there. This will mark its first appearance outside the country.

The idea behind the exhibit comes from the Pokémon games themselves. In many Pokémon titles, players can find fossils and revive them as ancient Pokémon. These "Fossil Pokémon" are inspired by real prehistoric animals, such as dinosaurs. This helps the exhibit connect real science to the world of Pokémon.

At the Field Museum, visitors will see drawings and 3D Pokémon figures alongside real fossils. They can compare "Fossil Pokémon" with real prehistoric animals, like SUE, the T. rex. She is one of the largest and most complete T. rex skeletons ever found. This lets them see the similarities and differences between fantasy creatures and real ancient animals.

Guests can also learn how fossils are found, studied, and reconstructed. Museum scientists will guide visitors through each step and answer questions.

The exhibit will run from May 22, 2026, through April 11, 2027. Special programs include a Family Night on May 22, 2026. Families will also be able to visit the exhibit before regular museum hours on June 6 and 7. Adults will have their own early-access sessions on select Saturdays later in the year.
