Comic book fans are in for a treat. May 2, 2026, brings both Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) and Comics Giveaway Day. Together, the two programs will give readers an even wider choice of free titles.

Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)

Joe Field came up with the idea of FCBD in 2001. The California-based comic retailer was inspired by the popularity of Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day. Field believed a similar event could help introduce new readers to comics. He shared the idea with retailers, publishers, and distributors, and in 2002 FCBD became a reality. Today, over 2,300 retailers worldwide participate in the event. To make the day more meaningful, publishers even create new titles just for the occasion.

This year’s FCBD includes 24 free titles. Readers will be able to choose from superhero, science fiction, and horror stories. Highlights include the DC Comics Next Level Sampler. It features previews of upcoming storylines from the DC Universe. Also available will be DC x Sonic the Hedgehog. This exciting comic brings together DC superheroes and characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog video games.

Comics Giveaway Day

Comics Giveaway Day is making its debut in 2026. While it takes place on the same date as FCBD, it offers a different selection of comics. The program’s main publisher, Marvel Comics, will offer several free titles. They feature some of its most well-known characters. These include popular superheroes such as Spider-Man and the Avengers.

Even if the free titles do not interest you, it might still be worth going to a comic book store on May 2. This is because most stores offer discounts on all comics and collectibles on this day.
