On April 22, 2026, more than a billion people around the world will celebrate Earth Day. The environmental movement was started by US Senator Gaylord Nelson. On April 22, 1970, he urged Americans to take to the streets and call for stronger environmental protections. The first Earth Day drew twenty million people from across the country. This was about 10 percent of the US population.
The peaceful protest was very effective. It led to landmark laws like the Clean Air Act (1970) and the Clean Water Act (1972). It also helped create the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970.
Earth Day is now a global event. Organized by EarthDay.org, it is celebrated in more than 190 countries. The day is marked by community cleanups, tree-planting initiatives, and climate marches. Many schools also plan lessons and activities centered around the environment.
2026 Theme: "Our Power, Our Planet"
The theme for Earth Day 2026 is “Our Power, Our Planet.” It highlights the urgent need to switch to clean energy sources to help fight climate change. EarthDay.org is urging the world to triple the use of clean energy, like wind and solar, by 2030. This bold step is necessary to reduce emissions and protect the planet.
However, achieving this goal will take collective action. Governments must lead by investing in renewable energy projects. Businesses must adopt greener practices like using recycled materials and supporting clean technology. Individuals can also help by reducing waste, saving energy, and using public transit.
Earth Day is a reminder that protecting the planet is a shared responsibility. So, be sure to do your part not just on April 22, but every day.
Happy Earth Day!
