In a plot that sounds straight out of a movie, a truck filled with KitKat bars vanished while en route from a Nestlé factory in central Italy to Poland. The shipment included more than 413,000 KitKat bars, shaped like Formula 1 race cars. They were part of a special release celebrating the 75th anniversary of Formula 1 auto racing and the 90th anniversary of KitKat.
The news of the heist broke on March 28, just days before April Fools' Day. Many people wondered if the robbery was just a clever prank. However, Nestlé insisted the heist was real and even asked the public for help.
On April 2, 2026, the company launched a "Stolen KitKat Tracker" on its website. Fans can scan the code on the wrapper or enter the 8-digit barcode to check if the KitKat is part of the stolen shipment. If it is, the site explains how to report it. As of April 10, 2026, however, there is still no sign of the stolen KitKats.
This is not the first time a major food theft has made headlines. In 2011 and 2012, thieves stole nearly 3,000 tons of maple syrup worth about $18 million from a storage facility in Quebec, Canada. The crime, later called "The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist," took place over several months. The thieves drained syrup from thousands of barrels, sometimes replacing it with water to avoid detection. Police eventually arrested more than a dozen people, but most of the syrup was never recovered. The famous heist even inspired a television series. Perhaps "The Great KitKat Heist" will lead to one as well.
