Looking for ideas for your Halloween pumpkin? Then you might want to check out American sculptor and artist Ray Villafane's masterpieces. The two-time winner of the Food Network's Outrageous Pumpkins competition does not just carve pumpkins. He transforms them into 3-D sculptures — ghoulish ones, of course!

Villafane was born in Queens, New York, and raised on Long Island. After graduating from New York City's School of Visual Arts in 1991, he moved to Bellaire, Michigan, where he worked as an art teacher. One Halloween, Villafane used his artistic skills to sculpt a pumpkin. It was so impressive that students began asking him to carve more pumpkins. Encouraged, he started offering his creations to neighborhood hotels and restaurants. Not surprisingly, they were in huge demand.

"I really enjoyed what I had stumbled upon," Villafane says. "The community liked it, and other students liked it, so it became a thing that I did for several years."

Villafane's sculpting skills opened doors beyond pumpkin carving. In 2006, he accepted a part-time position making toys for Marvel Comics. His wax sculpture of Wolverine from X-Men was so good that the company put it into production. Over the next two years, he created several prototypes of toys and action figures for the company. In 2008, Villafane quit teaching to work full-time at DC Comics.

But while he enjoyed carving toys, Villafane's true passion remained pumpkin carving. In 2010, the artist left DC Comics to pursue it full-time. He also began making detailed sculptures from sand, sticks, and wood.

Villafane's work with these materials led to permanent art installations like the "Boneyard Mining Company" at Arizona's Vulture City Ghost Town. The popular exhibit tells a story about two fictional creatures named Gordy and Gringor. Gordy dreams of doing the impossible, while Gringor doubts everything.

"Grimgor and Gordy are the optimists and pessimists that live in all of us," Villafane explains.

This Halloween, Villafane is showcasing his skills at the Great Gilbert Gourd Hunt in Gilbert, Arizona. The display runs from September 25 through November 1, 2026, and features more than 40 whimsical pumpkin characters. They are arranged in small scenes throughout the city's Heritage District. Visitors can also watch Villafane carve a pumpkin live at Water Tower Plaza on October 24, 2026.

For those inspired by Villafane's creations, he says the secret to successful pumpkin carving is choosing the right gourd. It should be big and heavy so there is plenty of flesh to sculpt. He also prefers pumpkins that are not perfectly round. Their unusual shapes help add character to his creations.
